Using Pot Odds is a way of calculating whether or not you should call a bet when you are on a draw or need another card to better your hand. It may seem complicated to begin with, but this is another mathematical way to improve your long term results at poker. This applies to both cash games and tournaments.

Lets say you have seen the flop with 8s 9s. The flop comes down 6s 4s kd. You need one more spade to complete your flush. The first thing you must do is calculate your chances of hitting that spade. This is done by counting the number of spades remaining ie. 9 multiply this by 2 = 18 and add one = 19. This means you have a 19% chance of hitting a spade on the turn. the idea of Pot Odds is that you do not call a bet of over 19% of the pot when you have that chance of hitting a card.

For example in the above situation the pot is 150 and a bet of 50 is made by your opponent. This is 25% of the pot which is now 200(150+50). You should not call this bet because you have negative pot odds.

In another example the pot is 180 and a bet of 20 is made by your opponent. This is 10% of the pot which is now 200(180+20). You can call this as you have a 19% chance of hitting that card so you are not over committing.

Pot Odds are another tool that takes a lot of discipline to adhere to but if they are adhered to will give you better long term results.
