Something I'm really understanding now is how important position is. Late position is the perfect place for controlled agression. Especially the dealer button.
When I am the dealer button or if the dealer button is at up to 2 places to my left, and if nobody has raised it.
Raise depending on the strength of your hand.
If up to and including the dealer button fold, part one of the play is complete.
You are now in pole position for the 2nd round of betting. You get to see what everybody else is willing to bet, then you get the final call. If it is checked around to you, bet the pot.
People saw your origonal raise and even if the flop hasn't been good to you, the pre-flop raise will scare people off most of the time, and you will have nice pot to add to your stack.
This move is a sure fire way to boost your chipstack. It's a fantastic way of winning sizeable pots when you don't even have the cards. But don't overuse it. If you are doing it everytime you are in this position, people will tag you as loose.
In a tournament with 9 players you will be in a position to play this move 33% of the time, so you have a lot of opportunites to use it.
You can use the move two ways
1. Whenever you get one of the top 20 startiing hands - Self Explanitory
2. It can be used sparingly as a bluff - Only play it as a bluff when you are the dealer though, and when bluffing the raise should be small, 2 or 3 times the big blind.
Be wary of anybody who calls a pot bet after checking origonally. They are more than likely to be packing.
Another good trick is turning off the setting that automatically mucks your cards. When you win a hand with an uncalled bet, and you were on top, show them the cards. It is important to do this as often as you can because it will decrease your chances of being tagged as loose.
This is for early in the game when the blinds are smaller and there are 5 or more people at the table. You need to tone it down when the blinds get bigger or there are less people at the table. When this happens make sure and tighten up.
Also if it doesn't start working out and you lose 30%-40% of your starting chips, fall back into a tight game.
